Best sensations

¶ 2 May 06

The rush of love, first whiff of spring blossoms, grit of the garden under fingernails, the sight of seeds sprouting (I never believe they will), a ludicrously good meal with sparkling companions, laughing till you’re weak with it, an unexpectedly lengthy and sensual head massage when being shampooed at the (go to only out of necessity) hairdresser’s, smell of steamed oranges being prepared by the best boyfriend ever when you’re bedfellows with the flu, untangled knot of massages, hitting send on a job that’s been expanding your repertoire of curse words for months, a long steaming hot bath after skiing (made better by brother and sister pounding on the bathroom door, and reminding them you called ‘first bath’ getting into the car, so they’ll just have to wait. Being the youngest, you won so few battles), a perfect cocktail handed to you after a long, lousy day, waking up thinking it’s Monday then realising it’s Sunday so sighing back into sleep, finally admitting that you’ll never wear that again, or that or (oh, man, who was I fooling) that… and tossing it all away, junk food before nausea sets in, sinking back into an obscenely large mass of pillows before opening the half-read book you’ve been craving all day, watching a truly great movie, making kids laugh.

  1. That moment just before you fall asleep when you know that however terrifying, worrying or problematic it is, you can’t do anything about it for now, it’ll just have to wait until tomorrow.

  2. When your dog runs ahead and you call him back. Upon hearing his name, he makes a hairpin turn and runs as fast as he can (ears and jowls flapping) to come back to you. The rush of love indeed.

  3. how about the rush of love, when you had thought it was no longer there and you want it to be and suddenly in the midst of a morning sleepy hug exchange you feel it all, or a small dog that finds its way under the comforter to sleep in the curve of two spooning bodies because close is where the warmth is, or a perfectly chilled fountain Coke just before you dive into the problem with your database…

  4. The feeling of the first truly warm day … that first day in the spring when the sun is soft and warm on your skin and the shade is no longer chilly.

  5. Finally getting that last piece of furniture – that last box or bag – into your new place after moving house. The deep breath. The arrival.

  6. Getting close to finishing your best painting, and slowing down, taking your time, so that the feeling of doing it right for once may last a bit longer.

  7. Slowly sinking into a nap during the early noon hours, on a day you’ve taken off of work. Then after waking, rolling over and grabbing the current read and sinking back into the pillows to read for hours.
