My inner Stalin

¶ 16 June 06

Alright, Susan, you’re on.

If you could be global despot for a year (a year? What am I saying? For life! Man, that would be exhausting) what would you do?

  1. Turn off all the electrical power to individual homes.

Electricity would still be available in public buildings: hospitals, schools, movie theaters, factories, etc.

  2. The sensible measures:

Tax the rich property; redistribute the wealth fairly to encourage economic growth in developing nations and improve the lot of breadliners the world over.

End protectionism – some farmers might get pissy, but they’re dwarfed by the numbers who would benefit.

    The fantasy measures:

A free round-the-world plane ticket for everyone – just because I’d love one.

Make all museums and galleries the world over admission-free – for your free round-the-world trip, of course.

  3. Everyone has to re-take their driving licence every 5 years.

Anyone who earns over 100K a year & doesn’t make any charitable donations has to stand on a street corner until they have begged $100, which they have to give to charity.

  4. Disarm the United States, and put it under the power of a Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Alternately, subject its leaders and cadre to war crimes trials in the Hague.

  6. The sad fact is that no one in power is interested in real ideas/real changes—they get elected by telling people that they will keep things as they are.

  7. Hmmm… my inner despot wrestles with my inner do-gooder. I suppose the real question is what wouldn’t I do?
