Sweet and low
¶ 31 July 06
Every once in a while, Dean offers up a few episodes of My Super Sweet 16 for our viewing pleasure then proceeds to laugh his face off throughout, while I spend the time trying very hard to see the humour.
And, yeah, I get the supposed schadenfreude, the ha ha what a bunch of shallow creeps they are, but mostly I just squirm and grumble from start to finish at the obscenity of it all (while, for some reason, also imagining dirt poor immigrants huddled around the set, watching the show in some crappy urban squat).
If there is nothing ambiguous about my revulsion, my failure to chuckle at the parade of unimaginative (as-seen-on-TV gotta have it) hedonistic extravagance, feeding one nouveau riche princess’s already dangerously overblown sense of entitlement (only slightly more cringe-inducing than the reactions of those invited to the bash, particularly at the inevitable car-giving moment), could be heightened by the fact that I grew up with those spoilt little bitches, so know the chances are pretty good that nothing positive will be forthcoming.
And, OMG, our 15-year-old daughter is, like, so totally not going to be watching it any time soon.

- This show brings out every bit of E.M. Forster inside of me (thanks, mom!). What would be even awesome-er is if MTV followed it up with the same girls in 5-7 years.

- Not having a TV, I hadn’t heard of it, but I followed your link and was appalled. THIS, the unabashedly horrific values and spiritual vacuum that permeate American ‘culture’, is why I want to move to France, and naturally, the two terms that best describe them; nouveau riche and gauche, are both French.
Pity the stupid young men who marry them! I’ve just got to get out of here before they breed.
And by the way, I too was brought up wealthy, so this isn’t sour grapes. I’d like to think that you and I are both examples of a different kind of rich-kid outcome; educated, refined, and psychologically unable to wear tiaras.

- OMG! That is soooo weird!! My boyfriend totally loves that show, I am, like, soooo not into it. I hear the opening credits and tightly grasp the box of condoms…because, quite honestly, that could easily be my spawn.
